HOT

Miserable hot. I went to the UCLA book fair today, primarily to see a friend who was working there, but also to scout out all the books. I had no idea what I was in for. First off, it was a hundred degrees. Second off, it's completely overwhelming, masses of people and masses of tents. So I just zeroed in on finding my friend, which wasn't so easy in itself.

On my way journey, I was stopped by a 50-something year old man who decided that insulting me would be the best way to start a conversation.

"You know you have to read to be able to enjoy a book fair."

Who does that? Well, I was dumbstruck and unfortunately instead of walking away, I explained that I did read and I was a writer. So he goes off on a spiel about how he's a producer, gave me his card, explaining he does book deals too and that he's looking for the next hit. Then he told me I was very pretty which made me marketable because television shows would want to book me for interviews. And then he told me to call him so we could get drinks and discuss the project. Who the heck is this guy?! It was all very depressing and I got on my way asap. I'm pretty so that means that my work is marketable, I just...Oooo...I can't even begin to rant about that. I hope it's not true, I hope it was just a line to get me to get drinks with him. I hope that's not the way the world works. Maybe in Hollywood, but literature?

I found Jenn who, being the trooper that she is, had been there all day in the sun yesterday, and was back for day 2. I could barely take the hour or so I hung out with her. I didn't even see the books because the heat was so bad. But it was worth it just to catch up with her a bit!

Yesterday I was at the beach all day so I'm pretty damn done with the heat. But now how to spend my day?

Perhaps, it's time to write.

Hey Lindsey,

I know what you mean I was completely confused by the Palm Desert thing, I hadnt even concidered them before. I have decided that is where I am going however. Despite having an offer from St Marys, which is just so expensive and in a pricy area. At first I was worried because I thought maybe they were just filling the program and offering it to everyone that UCR rejected. But I was told by the program director Tom that they basically have courted the people who were waitlisted at UCR, and I know someone else who was rejected from UCR and they told him he could contact Tom for other options but Tom did not directly approach him.
Here is why I have choosen Palm Desert. Partially price, secondly its in a good area looks safe and what not so even though I will be commuting to start with I have the option of moving there if the commute is just too much. Also UCR professors teach there from time to time, seems like they get about 2 a quarter. Being a UCR student now, Id really like to continue working with some of my past professors. I hadnt even heard of any of the professors at St Mary so at least here even if I havent had them before I have heard of them. I will tell you if you have never been to a UC that the quarter system is incredible fast, I enjoy it because you get to experience more classes then you would normally and if you dont like a class its over before you know it. Also one of the programs big draws, Susan Straight will be teaching next year but is taking a hiatis the following year. Alot of people apply to UCR just to work with her. I really didn't want a year off where I might start working and get distracted so thats why I am going on with Palm Desert. We would still be concidered UCR students just doing our work at Palm Desert- which is nice.

Unfortunetly I don't. The program is so new there really arnt many Alumni floating out there and being that the campuses are so seperate I dont know any current students. I have heard its not as good as the regular UCR program however you would still have a UCR degree.
I actually had a change or heart, still going to the program just I am going to do the low residency. Moving out there is just not good for me at this time and my parents have put their foot down and said they cannot let me commute for two years that far. It bothers me cause I wanted a traditional MFA but since its the same degree and I am not the type to procrastinate.

I thought about waiting a year but since I have the acceptance waiting a year might not change anything so might as well take my chance.

You should go out and visit though or something to see for yourself.

funny, i don't think its that hot here. Maybe because we're spoiled or something when going on week-long vacationesque trips to hawaii and Florida... still, it's cool and beautiful is it not? Where's this terrible heat? I want some!
